The Brewing Machinery Energy Revolution — How New Technology Is Cutting Craft Brewery Operating Costs by 85%
Ask most brewery owners what their biggest operating cost is, and they will say ingredients or labor. They are wrong. For many breweries, energy is the second-largest operating cost — and it is the one they have the least control over.

The Heat Pump Breakthrough
A pioneering heat pump project at Hepworth Brewery in Sussex is changing what is possible. The brewery became the first in the UK to trial a new type of heat pump that delivers low-carbon heat to the brewing process.
Unlike most heat pumps, which deliver hot water up to around 80°C, the Futraheat Greensteam 300kW heat pump can produce steam up to 130°C. At Hepworth, the system recovers waste heat at 100°C that was previously vented to atmosphere and upgrades it to process steam between 120°C and 130°C.
The results are staggering:
An 85.8 percent energy saving for the wort boiling process
A 91.2 percent reduction in CO₂ equivalent
A 65.3 percent energy cost reduction

Consistent steam output at 125°C, matching brewing specifications, with a high Coefficient of Performance (CoP ~ 6)
The Wort Boiling Innovation
A new wort boiling system from Ziemann Holvrieka is delivering similar results through a different approach. The Bubble Boil system reduces the necessary evaporation rate from 4 to 1.5 percent, drastically lowering heat consumption.
The wort is drawn from the kettle, heated above the boiling point in an external boiler, then reintroduced through special nozzles. The resulting pressure change creates vapor bubbles that ensure uniform mixing, prevent dead zones, and aid in the removal of unwanted volatile substances such as dimethyl sulfide (DMS).
A triangle test conducted with a consumer panel showed that beer made from wort produced with BubbleBoil is sensorially indistinguishable from conventionally brewed beer. The modification can achieve substantial energy savings of around 30 percent, even without an additional investment in energy recovery systems.
What This Means for Your Brewery
These technologies are not experimental. They are commercially available and proven at scale. The Hepworth project operated for over 70 hours at kettle boiling conditions, equivalent to 35 brews and around 500,000 pints of beer production.
The question is not whether these technologies work. It is whether you can afford to ignore them.
The Two-Track Market
The brewery equipment market is splitting into two tracks. Mature beer markets are investing in automation, packaging flexibility, quality control, and energy management. Emerging markets continue to add brewhouse and cellar capacity.
